Rock Your Socks celebrate World Down Syndrome Day with 50k pairs donated

Socks galore reaches the First State at the end of the month.

The Down Syndrome Association of Delaware (DSA of DE) is gearing up for an exciting and impactful celebration of World Down Syndrome Day on Friday, March 21.

Through its annual “Rock Your Socks” initiative, the organization aims to distribute over 50,000 pairs of brightly colored, mismatched socks to raise awareness, foster inclusion, and advocate for the rights of individuals with Down syndrome.

Since its inception in 2014, the Rock Your Socks program has grown significantly.

What began with the sale of just 2,000 pairs has evolved into a statewide tradition, becoming a symbol of unity and support for the Down syndrome community.

This year, the program is set to surpass 50,000 socks, continuing to spread a powerful message of inclusion across Delaware.

World Down Syndrome Day, celebrated each year on March 21, marks a date that highlights the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, the genetic characteristic that defines Down syndrome.

Symbolic socks

Mismatched socks were chosen as the symbol for the campaign, as they resemble the unique chromosomal pattern. By donning colorful, mismatched socks, participants send a bold message of solidarity and spark important conversations about Down syndrome.

“All are invited to join the Rock Your Socks movement by ordering socks and participating in all the Down Syndrome Association of Delaware events leading up to World Down Syndrome Day,” said Lauren Camp Gates, executive director of DSA of DE. “This is more than just a fundraiser; it’s an opportunity to honor accomplishments and advocate for the inclusion of individuals with Down syndrome both in Delaware and worldwide.”

The Down Syndrome Association of Delaware is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

Through education, advocacy, and community engagement, DSA of DE works to foster inclusion and empower individuals to reach their full potential.

Serving over 600 individuals throughout Delaware and neighboring states, the organization is one of the most prominent Down syndrome advocacy groups in the country.

The Rock Your Socks program is just one of several events organized by DSA of DE throughout March to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day. The schedule of events includes:

1. Run for the Buds (March 9): A 5K and 5-mile race benefiting the DSA of Delaware
2. Legislative Hall Advocacy Day (March 20): Led by Representative Krista Griffith, this event allows self-advocates and their families to meet with lawmakers at Legislative Hall, where they will wear mismatched socks and advocate for inclusion.
3. Guest Bartending (March 20): The 4th annual event features individuals with Down syndrome and local community supporters serving as “bartenders” in all three counties of Delaware.

Participants of the Rock Your Socks Day are encouraged to wear colorful mismatched socks and share their photos on social media using hashtags like #RockYourSocks and #WDSD2025.
