WILMINGTON – The YMCA of Delaware is introducing an innovative new program designed to support healthy aging through a holistic approach that integrates both physical and cognitive wellness.

BrainSavers, created by One Pass, is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing the vitality and independence of adults as they age.

The instructor-led program, available to all YMCA of Delaware members, is built on six core elements of brain-body wellness: social engagement, cognitive fitness, physical fitness, healthful nutrition, stress management, and quality sleep.

Goal of YMCA’s new program

The goal is to help participants maintain their mental and physical health, fostering resilience as they grow older.

Dr. Paul Bendheim, a neurologist and professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, founded BrainSavers to combat cognitive decline and promote brain health. With expertise in degenerative brain diseases like Alzheimer’s, Dr. Bendheim advocates for lifestyle changes as a key strategy in prevention, an approach that has had a lasting impact on the field of brain health.

Numerous studies have shown that physical exercise plays a crucial role in maintaining cognitive function, especially for older adults.

The American Psychological Association highlights how regular physical activity improves cognitive abilities such as memory, reasoning, and reaction time.

This focus on physical fitness is one of the central components of the BrainSavers program.

“The program empowers individuals to make simple yet powerful lifestyle changes that enhance brain health and overall well-being,” said Amy Desmond, Director of Healthy Living and Strategic Partnerships at the YMCA of Delaware. “BrainSavers is truly a game-changer for adults looking to stay sharp and active as they age.”

Participants in BrainSavers will engage in an interactive curriculum that combines physical activity with brain-boosting exercises and wellness strategies, all designed to support cognitive and physical health. This unique blend of activities encourages social connections and strengthens both mind and body.

By combining proven methods of brain fitness with community support, BrainSavers stands as a leading initiative in the global effort to reduce age-related cognitive decline and promote healthier, more active lives for older adults.

The BrainSavers program will run from Feb. 24 to May 14, with sessions held twice a week across all YMCA of Delaware branches. The cost for the program is $50.

YMCA members interested in joining the program can register through their local branch or by clicking here for more information.
