ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
The Delaware Division of the Arts, in partnership with Mariposa Arts and the Office of Veterans Services, introduced CreatiVeterans—a transformative, free eight-week art program designed exclusively for Delaware veterans. This statewide initiative provides artistic expression, social connection, and well-being opportunities through meaningful arts engagement. Participants in CreatiVeterans will explore various artistic techniques under the guidance of professional teaching artists at arts organizations in all three Delaware counties. No prior art experience is required, and veterans are encouraged to express themselves creatively in a welcoming and supportive environment. The CreatiVeterans program is free for Delaware veterans, but space is limited to 12 participants per session. Registration and full details are available at https://arts.delaware.gov/creativeterans.
The Delaware Art Museum is offering DelArt Cinema screenings on Saturdays at 1:30 pm, with the last Saturday of the month being a free member screening. The second Sunday of each month at 1:30 will be a screening for families. The first curated program will complement DelArt’s Jazz Age Illustration exhibition and will featur Singin in the Rain, The Roaring Twenties, Some Like It Hot, and The Rules of the Game. The kids’ screening in January will be The Iron Giant.
BUSINESS
Officials and developers of Phase 5 of The Flats, a multiphase housing project that is redeveloping Wilmington property from the early 1900s into quality affordable housing for low-income individuals and those with disabilities. The Todmorden Foundation is leading the project through its partnership with Woodlawn Trustees. The Flats has become a major driver of Wilmington’s economic development, representing a capital investment of more than $110 million in the city. The project has created hundreds of construction and auxiliary-service jobs and spurred new development in the neighborhood. Phase 5 of The Flats focuses on the intersection of Bayard Avenue and 4th St. in Wilmington. The Flats is a seven-phase project that, when complete, will consist of 434 modern, affordable units with access to public transportation, on-site supportive services, 24-hour maintenance services, free wireless internet and an on-site community center.
If you didn’t file the Beneficial Ownership Information Report (BOIR) by December 31 with the U.S. Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Reporting Network (or didn’t know such a thing existed), there’s no need to worry about big fines. A lawsuit filed in Texas had led to a delay in the deadline. The BOIR filing is mandatory for nearly all businesses that are incorporated as limited liability companies (LLCs) and is designed to aid efforts to fight money laundering and other activities under LLCs. BOIR reports can be filed here on the government site free of charge, with some advisors telling their clients to do so despite the court battle.
Best Egg has signed a $1B loan agreement with investment firm with Minneapolis-based AB CarVal that will enable it to grow its vehicle-equity loan portfolio by buying a fixed number of loans in Best Egg’s portfolio.

EDUCATION
Fourteen University of Delaware students will begin conducting research and learning basic Japanese language — while enjoying the best ramen of their life — starting next week on the cultural psychology study abroad program in Japan. More than 1,000 other students will begin studying topics from conservation in Costa Rica to art and social change in Tanzania as part of 54 study abroad programs that will begin in the coming days for the 2025 Winter Session.
ENVIRONMENT
The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control reminds residents and visitors that sledding, snowboarding and other recreational activities are not allowed on Delaware’s sand dunes. Dunes contain fragile wildlife habitat and provide protection for the beaches and the communities they border. In addition to asking the public to help protect the dunes, the DNREC Division of Parks and Recreation also advises that, except for at marked crossings, pedestrian traffic and recreation activities are prohibited on dunes in Cape Henlopen and Delaware Seashore state parks.
GOVERNMENT
Rob Coupe, Delaware’s first marijuana czar, will step down Jan. 17 to become the next chief of staff for CRx Construction in Rehoboth Beach. During his time in office, he worked to draft regulations for Delaware’s rising recreational marijuana industry.
City officials have completed the latest round of the Wilmington Homeowner Repair Lottery Drawing to select City homeowners aged 65 and over for a chance to receive a critical home repair totaling up to $10,000. 65 numbers were drawn from 359 registered applicants. There is an income eligibility limit for Wilmington’s Homeowner Repair Program, which is intended to ensure that funding is available to those who need it most, and individuals must reside in and be the legal owner of the property to receive funding. Funding for the Wilmington Homeowner Repair Program totals about $1.7 million, and the lottery process was used to give those who registered an equal opportunity to be selected.
POLICE, FIRE, AND MILITARY
House Rep. Kevin Hensley (R-Odessa) is facing DUI and vehicular assault charges after allegedly driving while intoxicated, causing a crash, failing to yield the right-of-way, and driving with expired insurance. Camden state troopers said Hensley’s blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit.
Marine Corps Education Command, Marine Corps University, has launched of the Staff Noncommissioned Officer (SNCO) Leadership School (SLS), combining former professional military education requirements for staff sergeants and gunnery sergeants. Previously, SNCOs attended separate Career and Advanced Schools, but the new unified curriculum will streamline their education and provide a higher standard of leadership training for all junior and mid-grade SNCOs. Platinum Dining Group (Capers & Lemons, Eclipse, Taverna, and more) has purchased Hearth Kitchen in the Shoppes of Longwood Village in Kennett Square. Hearth will closed for renovations until early March with a new Mediterranean-inspired menu that includes wood-fired pizzas and pastas.

Five star players, a championship coach and a long-time referee have been elected to the 17th class of the Delaware Basketball Hall of Fame. They will be honored at an induction luncheon on Saturday, February 8, at the Embassy Suites, Newark. Walt Hazzard, who was the first Delaware native to become an All-American, Olympic gold medalist and NBA all-star will also be honored. The inductees are:

- Chelsea Davis, Delaware player of the year at Middletown and power forward for a top-25 team at Florida State
- Helen Doherty, a multi-sport star at Ursuline and beyond who starred for the World Basketball Tournament champion Philadelphia Aces.
- Rex Gardecki, a high school All-American at Salesianum, a star at PMC, and key member of one of the nation’s top pro teams in the 1940s.
- Rob Turner, now known as Dutch Mufasia, all-state at Wilmington High and starting guard for University of Indiana.
- Ron Abrams, who has officiated at every level for over 45 years.
- Lou DiMascio, who coached Ursuline to two state championships after his own all-state playing career at Salesianum.
Urban Youth League: Sunday Night Baskeball will kick off Jan. 12 and run through March 9 at the Garfield Park PAL Center in New Castle. Ages are 3rd grade through 12th grade and there are a guaranteed six regular season games on Sundays at 4 pm. Cost is $300 per team and all skill levels are welcome. Selena E. Molina has been appointed Senior Magistrate Judge by Chancellor Kathaleen St. J. McCormick, effective January 1, 2025. In this
role, Magistrate Molina will continue to handle cases and assist the Chancellor with administrative tasks associated with the Magistrate docket.
New Castle County Executive-Elect Marcus Henry has appointed Aaron Goldstein as the County Attorney for New Castle County.
Peter Osborne has more than 15 years of experience as an award-winning business reporter and editor, leading two papers (the Delaware Business Times and Dallas Business Journal) to recognition as the nation’s most improved business publications. Osborne also helped launch The News Journal’s now-defunct Business Monday section and worked in communications and business development for MBNA America and Bank of America.
