NEW CASTLE – We are in the age of iPad kids, streaming, and constant screen time, and the Colonial School District is trying to help parents navigate all that.
Parents looking to better understand their children’s online habits are invited to a special event hosted by tech life expert Stephanie Humphrey at William Penn High School.
On Tuesday, April 15, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Humphrey will offer insight into the world of technology, the internet, and social media, helping parents feel more empowered in guiding their kids through the digital landscape.

Humphrey, known for her expertise in tech education, will present “‘Til Death Do You Tweet,” a session designed to provide parents with essential knowledge about popular social media platforms and the risks associated with them.
“I have a parent group that advises me on communication stuff in the district, we meet once a month, and we were trying to find a what we can do to get parents out, get them more engaged, or figure out better ways for us to communicate as a district,” said Gabriel Phillips, strategic communications officer for Colonial. “One of the things we’ve been talking about forever was doing an event like this.”
The district has done safety and security and other events that are of interest to parents and families, but with the prominence of social media, a seminar like this is needed, too.
Attendees will gain practical tools and resources to start important conversations with their children about responsible online behavior.
The event will cover topics ranging from online safety to digital citizenship, offering actionable advice that can help parents protect their children in an increasingly connected world.
This is a great opportunity for parents to get informed, ask questions, and feel more confident in discussing the digital world with their children.
The district has had Humphrey speak before, but it was pre-pandemic, so Colonial has tried to get her back, and really started organizing this event since the winter.
“We know as parents, we sometimes need a different voice, and Steph has talked before, she’s a nationally known speaker, and it’s just to give parents some advice, like when your kids are on social media, what don’t you know? Or what do you know?” Phillips said. “She’s an industry expert, so let’s hear from her.”
There will be about a half-hour Q&A session following Humphrey’s presentation.
“And if we run out of time, we can set up times where parents can ask questions or get connections to places where they can get answers,” Phillips said.
He encourages people to come to the event, and said he hopes the district will host more of these events.
“I know, as a parent, I have a ton of questions about different things, because I have a fifth grader and an eighth grader, and I’m more plugged in probably than the usual parent with social media, but I still have a bunch of questions,” Phillips said. “This definitely is something that parents can utilize.”
