Delmarva and Arbor Day Foundation offer free trees to boost energy efficiency

In an effort to promote sustainability and energy efficiency, Delmarva Power is offering 730 free trees to its residential customers through a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation’s Energy-Saving Trees program.

This initiative, designed to lower energy costs, improve energy efficiency, and enhance the environment, is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Customers can choose from a variety of native tree species, including Baldcypress, River Birch, Eastern Redbud, Red Maple, and Flowering Dogwood. The trees will be distributed across Delmarva Power’s service area, with the goal of helping homeowners reduce their energy bills by 15 to 30 percent over time.

As these trees mature, they will provide natural shade in the summer and act as windbreaks in the winter, reducing heating and cooling needs.

Phil Vavala, Delmarva Power’s region president, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability and community.

“We know the value that trees and environmental stewardship bring to our communities and the cost-saving energy-efficient benefits customers experience,” he said. “Our more than 10-year partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation is a key element in building a greener future.”

The initiative not only offers energy-saving advantages but also helps improve local air quality.

Through interactive online tools provided by the Arbor Day Foundation, customers can determine the optimal planting locations for their trees to maximize their energy-saving potential.

Since the partnership began in 2012, Delmarva Power has distributed thousands of trees, which are expected to reduce air pollution by over 206,635 pounds, save nearly 27.3 million kWh of energy, and generate nearly $11 million in combined energy and community benefits.

Kristen Bosquet of the Arbor Day Foundation highlighted the broader impact of tree planting on community well-being.

“Growing thriving tree canopies is an instrumental part of building strong, healthy communities,” Bosquet said. “By empowering community members to plant trees today, Delmarva Power is helping lay the groundwork for a better tomorrow.”
