It’s that time of year again.
Delaware residents living within a 10-mile radius of the Salem/Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations in New Jersey will hear sirens on Tuesday, April 1st, at 7:20 p.m. during a quarterly test of the area’s Alert and Notification system.
The test, conducted by the Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA), Delaware State Police, and Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. (PSEG), will ensure that the siren system is functioning properly.

The test will involve the activation of 37 sirens located in Delaware, covering areas from Delaware City in the north, west to Middletown, and south to Woodland Beach.
The sirens will sound for three to five minutes, followed by an Emergency Alert System (EAS) message broadcasted on local radio stations.
These sirens are the same ones that would be used to alert the public in the event of an actual emergency at either the Salem or Hope Creek nuclear plants.
In the case of a real emergency, the sirens would sound continuously for three to five minutes, signaling residents to tune into their local EAS station for urgent updates and instructions.
For any questions about the upcoming test or radiological preparedness, residents can contact DEMA at 1-877-SAY-DEMA (1-877-729-3362) or (302) 659-3362 and ask for Stephen Davis. More information on preparedness is available at PrepareDE.org.
