WILMINGTON- The Firm Foundation Recovery organization is gearing up for its highly anticipated annual community event, the Hoops for Help 3-on-3 basketball tournament, at Chase Field House, this weekend.
The tournament serves as both a competitive sporting event and a rallying point for the community to support addiction recovery efforts in Delaware.
The foundation hosts six family-focused community events annually, uniting 40 to 50 organizations and drawing thousands of attendees to raise awareness and provide essential resources for addiction recovery.
Firm Foundation Recovery Board President, Zack Bib, emphasized the importance of these events, which have been held for the past six years.
This year’s Hoops for Help tournament will feature 32 teams in a fast-paced, double-elimination format, with games played to 13 points on a 12-minute running clock. Open to players 14 and older, teams of four to six must include one female player on the court until four points are scored, with top teams earning prizes and trophies thanks to sponsors.
In addition to the tournament, a free throw contest for children aged 8 to 13 will provide an opportunity for younger participants to engage in the event, with prizes and trophies available.
This focus on family engagement aligns with Firm Foundation Recovery’s mission to not only assist those struggling with addiction, but also to provide a supportive environment for their loved ones.
“The kids and parents who attend get to experience a loving atmosphere and valuable resources, while making quality memories,” Zack Bib said.
The event is a critical part of the foundation’s larger goal, the construction of a 54-bed recovery facility in Kent County. Funded entirely by community donations, the facility will provide long-term, free recovery services for individuals transitioning from treatment into sustained sobriety.
“Our goal is to build the facility this year and operate it next year. We rely solely on community support to make this happen, ensuring that our approach to recovery remains true to our mission,” Bib said.
Firm Foundation Recovery, which does not accept state or federal funding, is committed to a community-based approach. Their mission is not just about treatment but also about connecting individuals to a lasting support system.
“Recovery is about more than just getting sober—it’s about having a community that uplifts and supports you,” he said.
With backing from numerous local churches, businesses, and organizations, the foundation aims to expand its efforts further, with a long-term vision of establishing similar recovery centers in all three Delaware counties and beyond.
As the tournament date approaches, organizers encourage the community to participate—whether by joining a team, attending as a spectator, or supporting the initiative through donations.
“Come out and experience the spirit of healing,” Bib urged. “Together, we can help Delaware break new ground for recovery in 2025.”
