Siara Husain from Newark’s Islamic Academy won the 2025 Delaware Regional Spelling Bee over the weekend, securing her victory with the word “codswallop,” which essentially means nonsense of foolishness.

More than 50 talented spellers from across Delaware for the event, hosted by First State Educate.

With more than 200 attendees, the event was a vibrant celebration of education and community spirit.

After an intense competition,  Husain will represent Delaware at the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. this May.

In addition to her spelling bee triumph, she was invited to shadow Delaware’s Lieutenant Governor Kyle Evans-Gay for a day, a special honor that highlights her achievement.

Aurelia Tran from Talley Middle School took second place, while Kshirja Chauhan from Carvel Academy claimed third.

The event embodied the spirit of teamwork and determination, with every contestant celebrated for their hard work and dedication.

In a  reflection of the collective effort, First State Educate organizers noted that the event made each participant part of Team Delaware, all aiming for the “Super Bowl of Spelling.”

Husain’s upcoming national appearance symbolizes the potential of every Delaware student and the value of supporting their educational journey, First State Educate stated.

They said Husain’s win represents more than just spelling prowess—it’s a testament to the power of community, the importance of perseverance, and the boundless potential of Delaware’s students.
