6 NCCo school districts collab for Transition to Adult Life fair

Six of the state’s 19 school districts – all in New Castle County – are partnering for an event at the end of March to help some of their students prepare for life after school.

Families of students receiving special education services are invited to the 2025 Transition to Adult Life Fair, set to take place at Delaware Technical Community College’s Stanton Campus (400 Stanton Christiana Road in Newark) on Thursday, March 27 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The fair is organized by Appoquinimink, Brandywine, Christina, Colonial, New Castle County Vocational Technical, and Red Clay Consolidated school districts.

“Events like these are so important because the transition process is a key part of the individualized education plan,” said Dr. Chrishaun Fitzgerald, director of inclusive learning at Appo. “Transitioning a student requires a focus on community participation, independent living, and employment. This event helps us identify community partners who can serve our students.”

The event is also unique, she said, because it allows schools to work collaboratively with sister districts to serve students with exceptionalities.

“It’s not just one district, we’re all working together to transition our students,” she said. “This event provides our students who are preparing to transition the opportunity to match their skills with community partners who are engaged and committed to serving our students as they transition to adulthood.”

This annual fair is designed to provide families with the tools, resources, and insights needed to navigate becoming adults.

With presentations from key organizations such as the Delaware Division of Developmental Disabilities Services and the Delaware Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, attendees will have the opportunity to explore services available for students with disabilities.

The event will provide information on employment opportunities, independent living resources, government services, and more, serving as a one-stop resource center tailored to meet your family needs.

The fair will feature a wide array of resources, providing valuable information to help families plan for their students’ futures.

The Transition to Adult Life Fair is free and open to all families in the area.
