Eagles hire Bowling Green’s Scot Loeffler as quarterbacks coach

Scot Loeffler, the longtime Bowling Green State head coach, is set to become the next Eagles quarterbacks coach, the school announced on Friday.

The 50-year-old Loeffler spent the last six seasons at Bowling Green, his first head coaching gig at the collegiate level. He has spent the bulk of his 28-year coaching career focusing on quarterbacks, including a year at Temple as the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2011.

Loeffler, who is from Barberton, Ohio, played quarterback at Michigan from 1993 to 1996 and was a teammate there of Tom Brady’s. He became a graduate assistant for the program after an injury ended his playing career, winning a national championship in 1997.

He has some familiarity with at least one member of the Eagles coaching staff. Loeffler was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Virginia Tech from 2013 to 2015, when Aaron Moorehead, now the Eagles’ wide receivers coach, coached the wideouts there in 2013-14.

The Eagles coaching job will be Loeffler’s second at the NFL level. He served as the Detroit Lions’ quarterbacks coach for one season, 2008, before joining Urban Meyer’s staff at Florida to work in the same role for two seasons.

Brady is one of eight quarterbacks Loeffler coached in college who went on to have NFL careers. In addition to Brady, Loeffler worked with Tim Tebow (Florida), Brian Griese (Michigan), Chad Henne (Michigan), Drew Henson (Michigan), John Navarre (Michigan), Logan Thomas (Virginia Tech), and Anthony Brown (Boston College).

Loeffler is set to replace Doug Nussmeier, who is departing for the New Orleans Saints to serve as offensive coordinator on Kellen Moore’s staff. Jalen Hurts will have a different quarterbacks coach in five of his six seasons in the NFL.

The Eagles have been busy filling out their coaching staff in the wake of Moore’s departure. Last week, the team promoted Kevin Patullo from passing game coordinator to offensive coordinator. Parks Frazier, who overlapped with Patullo and Nick Sirianni with the Indianapolis Colts, is set to replace Patullo as passing game coordinator.
