Lawmakers introduce task force to explore nuclear energy potential

DOVER – A new legislative effort in Delaware aims to explore the feasibility of incorporating nuclear energy into the state’s energy portfolio.

State Senator Bryant Richardson, R-Seaford, has introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution 18, which calls for the creation of the Delaware Nuclear Energy Feasibility Task Force.

The task force will evaluate the potential benefits and challenges of utilizing Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) as a way to address the state’s energy needs.

SMRs are advanced nuclear reactors that have a power capacity of up to 300 MW(e) per unit, which is roughly a third of the generating capacity of traditional nuclear power reactors.

Potential impact of nuclear energy

As Delaware grapples with rising concerns about energy reliability, cost, and sustainability, SCR 18 seeks to explore SMRs as a potential long-term solution.

Currently, Delaware imports a significant portion of its electricity, which not only increases costs but also raises emissions due to transmission inefficiencies.

“Nuclear energy, and specifically SMRs, presents an opportunity to provide Delaware with a stable, reliable, and carbon-free source of power,” Richardson said. “By exploring this option, we can determine whether nuclear energy has a place in Delaware’s future and ensure that our residents and businesses have access to affordable and dependable electricity.”

SMRs, which are smaller and more flexible than traditional nuclear plants, offer several advantages, including enhanced safety features, reduced land requirements, and lower cooling water needs.

The task force will assess the viability of SMRs in Delaware by looking into factors such as potential locations, economic impacts, regulatory challenges, and environmental considerations.

State Representative Jeff Hilovsky, R-Long Neck/Oak Orchard, who serves as the co-prime sponsor of the resolution in the House, emphasized the importance of thoroughly evaluating all potential energy solutions.

“As our state looks for sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions, it’s important that we evaluate every viable option,” Hilovsky said. “This task force will provide the necessary research to determine whether clean nuclear energy can play a role in securing Delaware’s energy future while supporting economic growth and job creation.”

The task force would nclude members from both the public and private sectors, including energy experts, environmental specialists, business leaders, and policymakers. The final report with the task force’s findings and recommendations would be submitted to the General Assembly and governor by October 31.

If successful, the initiative could significantly reshape Delaware’s energy landscape, providing cleaner, more reliable, and more affordable electricity options for residents and businesses alike.

Efforts to reach Senate and House Democrats for comment Tuesday and Wednesday were unsuccessful.
