Imhotep Charter’s Zahir Mathis, one of the nation’s top edge rushers, announced his college commitment to Maryland on Wednesday’s national signing day.
Mathis, a four-star recruit at 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, previously was committed to Ohio State, but he withdrew his pledge in November. He chose the Terrapins over Florida State, UCLA, Michigan, and Virginia Tech. He officially visited Maryland and Florida State.
The All-American, who finished with 30 total tackles and three sacks in nine games with the Panthers this season, is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 4 recruit in the state and the No. 20 edge rusher in the class of 2025.
Maryland went 4-8 overall and 1-8 in the Big Ten and finished last in the conference in sacks this season. Mathis will join a recruiting class of 24 committed recruits and is one of three defensive ends.
He helped Imhotep to a 10-2 season. The Panthers fell to St. Joseph’s Prep in the District 12 playoffs.
