Andrew Diego, RN, of Christiana Care’s Union Hospital has received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
ChristianaCare DAISY Award recipients are nurses recognized for meeting and exceeding the needs and expectations of patients and families by displaying exceptional clinical skills, compassion, calm, respect and partnership.
Diego was nominated by a patient and the husband of a patient who both acknowledged his exceptional dedication and compassionate care.
“Andrew is the personification of caring and professionalism in the medical field,” one nominator shared. “From the moment I arrived at the emergency department, Andrew’s professionalism and caring nature were evident.
“He helped me get settled into a room and went out of his way to alleviate my stress and concerns about being admitted into the hospital.”
Another nominator shared heartfelt appreciation for Andrew’s care of his wife: “Whenever my wife needed assistance, including help getting out of bed to use the restroom, Andrew was there to provide support. He made sure she was able to use the restroom comfortably, avoiding the need for a catheter.”
The nominator also expressed deep gratitude for Andrew’s thoughtful and attentive approach.
“Andrew was gentle and caring when he helped her complete her daily routines. He always made sure she was comfortable with each task, from the simplest to the more complex,” the nominator wrote. “He took the time to explain his plans, earning her confidence and making her stay more comfortable.”
The Professional Nurse Council at ChristianaCare selects DAISY Award recipients using an anonymous selection process based on nominations from patients, families and all members of the ChristianaCare team. All nurses — inpatient, outpatient and ChristianaCare HomeHealth — are eligible.
