WILMINGTON — No. 7 William Penn went on a late 12-2 run to hand the No. 2 St Elizabeth Vikings its first in-state loss of the season in front of a home crowd, 60-52.

The Colonials are full of young talent but looked to their senior leadership of Zy’Aire Gibson and Andy Webb to close out the game. Gibson scored 17 points, while Webb scored 18 as the two seniors combined for 35 of the team’s 60 points.

In a postgame interview, Gibson was named our DE302 player of the game and told us, “We know we are a young team, but I feel like we are all mature. Even though we are young, people doubt us, but we play hard every time we come out.”

The Colonials were coming off a tough two-point loss to No. 1 Sanford. In that game, they trailed by eight points against the Warriors, but fell short of a comeback.

William Penn coach Gary Lumpkin said “We are a gritty young bunch. They say your team takes on the persona of their coach. I coach hard, and they go out and play for me and this program.”

William Penn has a tough week next week as they face No. 4 Odessa on the road and host No. 6 Middletown.
