Villanova’s Nnanna Njoku out for the rest of the season after knee surgery

Another basketball season is ending prematurely because of injury for Villanova forward Nnanna Njoku.

Njoku had surgery Wednesday on his left knee, according to a school press release, and will miss the remainder of the season.

This marks consecutive seasons ended because of knee surgery. Njoku, a Delaware native, had surgery on his right knee last January. A reserve forward, the 6-foot-9 Njoku appeared in 10 games this season, averaging 9.5 minutes.

Injuries have greatly impacted Njoku’s four seasons at Villanova, where he has played in just 34 career games after a stellar high school career at the Sanford School in Hockessin, Del.

A foot injury ended his sophomore season after just four games. Njoku played sparingly in nine games as a freshman during the 2021-22 season.

“We’re disappointed for Nnanna that he is dealing with another injury setback,” Villanova coach Kyle Neptune said in a release. “He gave us quality minutes at the forward position earlier this season and we’ll miss the energy he brings to the court every day. As he has before, Nnanna will bring a great attitude to his recovery and continue to take pride in doing everything he can to support his teammates and coaches.”

Villanova (11-7, 4-3 Big East) returns to action Friday in a home game at the Wells Fargo Center against Providence (7 p.m., FS1).
