Report: Dallas Cowboys request interview with Eagles OC Kellen Moore for head coaching vacancy

The Cowboys have formally requested to interview Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore for their head coaching job, according to a multiple reports saying Moore is scheduled to interview Friday — two days ahead of the Eagles’ divisional-round game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Moore, a former quarterback, spent three seasons with the Cowboys as a player from 2015 to 2017 before joining former head coach Jason Garrett’s staff as the team’s quarterbacks coach. He later became the offensive coordinator under Garrett and then Mike McCarthy.

The Cowboys and McCarthy parted ways earlier this week after McCarthy led the club for five seasons. Dallas missed the playoffs this season after three consecutive trips to the postseason.

Dallas isn’t the first team to request an interview with Moore, who is in his first season as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator. The New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars have expressed interest.

According to Sports Illustrated, Moore is also scheduled to interview remotely with the Jaguars on Friday and the Saints on Saturday.

Moore was asked Tuesday about the opening in Dallas.

“Obviously, I spent a lot of time there, eight years there, and so obviously you have plenty of relationships about that place,” he said. “I love it here. I’ve had so much fun here. It’s been a really fun process and we’re in a really special situation right now getting the chance to play this Sunday, have a chance to make a run at this thing and that’s really all you worry about. “Everything else is what it is and we’ll see where it takes you.”

Moore is the third offensive coordinator under Nick Sirianni. Quarterback Jalen Hurts has had a revolving door of play callers here and dating back to his time in college, and if Moore departed it would lead to yet another change for Hurts and the Eagles.

The 35-year-old Moore, if he gets a job in this cycle, would become the third coordinator in Sirianni’s four seasons to get a head coaching gig, following Shane Steichen (Indianapolis) and Jonathan Gannon (Arizona).

Sirianni last week gave Moore a ringing endorsement when asked what would make Moore a good NFL head coach.

”I think Kellen is very detailed in everything that he does,” Sirianni said. “Very smart. Played at a very high level and done this at a very high level, so can relate to the players in that aspect. Puts the guys in good positions to succeed. Can lead men. Is a good leader of men.

“You know, as I get to sit here and watch him install the offense, you know, you can see that and you can say, ‘Man, he’d be great in front of the team.’ He’s in front of the offense right now, but, man, he’d be great in front of the entire team, inspiring the team, getting his message across to the team, coaching football to the team. You know, coaching the ins and outs of football.

“Can’t say enough good things about what he’s done here as our coordinator, how much I think of him as a play-caller and offensive coordinator. I think of him very highly as a person. A great man of character and everything he stands for. I think he would be — yeah, I should temper — a great head coach. I have no doubt in my mind. He will be a great head coach.”
