My initial reaction to yesterday’s decision by the Sixers to stay in South Philadelphia was disappointment and frustration. Through an extensive approval process, City Council did its legislative due diligence and considered the Sixers plan for a new arena in Center City. 10,000 union jobs, $700 million in education funding, and $1.3 billion in private investment were at stake. The arena offered economic and community-building opportunities for Market East, an area of our city that is in decline.
After yesterday’s announcement of a South Philadelphia arena, many of my colleagues, voicing similar concerns, were worried about the future of development in Market East.
More details of the Sixers’ new proposal have emerged during today’s press conference by Mayor Parker, Council President Johnson, and other stakeholders. I have renewed hope that not only will the new proposal bring economic development to South Philadelphia but will also shift focus toward Market East and its untapped potential.
East Market has the potential to become more than just a location; it can become a destination that reflects the spirit and diversity of Philadelphia. The walk between City Hall and Independence Hall should be reflective of the rich history and potential our city has. We must prioritize initiatives that ensure safety, accessibility, and a sense of community in the area. Together, we can build a future that benefits all Philadelphians.
Moving forward with the new arena plan, I believe it’s important City Council continues asking the tough questions and ensures the processes for both the South Philadelphia arena and Market East are transparent and community-driven. We must continue to put Philadelphia first.
I will fight to make sure that all parties that were guaranteed funding in our initial agreement are represented in this new agreement. I will fight for the benefits that were won previously, especially the $700 million in tax revenue for our city and our schools.
I trust the leadership of Council President Johnson and expect more communication moving forward, which will be essential for any future projects that come before Council. I also fully support Mayor Parker’s vision for the city, One Philly, and her dedication to equal opportunity for all Philadelphians.
