One of Delaware’s most celebrated fundraising events — the 34th Lewes Polar Bear Plunge Benefiting Special Olympics Delaware, presented by Wawa — takes center stage at Rehoboth Beach on Sunday, February 2, at 1 pm..

The plunge began in 1992 with 78 participants raising $7,000. Last year, 4,380 Bears raised nearly $1.5 million through in-person and virtual plunges. The event has generated more than $17.2 million to support Special Olympics Delaware’s mission, which includes sports training, competition, health initiatives, education, and leadership programs for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

“The Polar Bear Plunge is more than a fundraising event — it’s a testament to the incredible spirit of community and inclusion,” said Special Olympics Delaware President and CEO David Halley. “Every participant, sponsor, and supporter is part of a legacy that directly impacts the lives of our athletes. Their dedication drives us to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to shine, both on and off the playing field.”

Wawa returns for its 19th consecutive year as presenting sponsor, with its associates providing free hot beverages to plungers from Wawa’s Community Care vehicle. Additionally, Wawa stores across the chain are collecting donations through February 23 to benefit Special Olympics.

“Wawa and The Wawa Foundation are committed to building stronger communities and are proud to support Special Olympics Delaware at their Polar Plunge to help support thousands of athletes who train and compete year-round,” said Wawa Foundation President Liz Simeone. “There’s no better feeling for our associates than volunteering their time to brighten the days of friends and neighbors in our community. We’re with you each step of the way!”

The Plunge weekend is packed with festivities, including:

  • Saturday: A 5k Run to the Plunge, sand sculpting demonstration, Fire & Ice Festivities, and the Restaurant Chili Tasting contest.
  • Sunday: Ice sculpting demonstration, sand sculpting demonstration, Polar Bear Plunge, Après Plunge Party at the Convention Center immediately following the plunge.
