Salesianum wrestlers take 4 titles, win team title at Delcastle Invitational

WILMINGTON – Salesianum led the field at the Delcastle Invitational wrestling tournament, claiming the team title with 298 points and crowning four champions. Caesar Rodney had two champions and finished second with 249 points. William Penn (200), St. Georges (199.5) and Sussex Tech (165) rounded out the top five in the 24 team event.

Salesianum won the first two weight classes as Mason Catania upset top-ranked Ben Donato of Caesar Rodney 10-5 in the 106-pound weight class. Gabe Campanelli followed with a second title for the Sals, winning a 10-5 decision over Gavin Robbins of Caesar Rodney at 113 pounds.

Ricky Jewell (150) won by a 16-0 technical fall over Jamir Ross of Wm Penn, and Brayden Ranauto (190) rounded out the Salesianum individual champions, pinning Milford’s Brian Seward in 40 seconds.

Downstate schools perform well at Delcastle Invitational

Caesar Rodney crowned two champions in top-ranked Trevor Copes at 138 pounds, winning a 12-3 major decision over Santino Sianni of Salesianum. Copes trailed 3-1 heading into the third period and reeled off 11 unanswered points in the third period. The Riders’ Craig Dixon avenged a loss earlier in the season to Sussex Tech’s Bennett Brumbley at 165 pounds with a 5-3 decision.

Sussex Tech had two champs as top-ranked Dustin Elliott recorded a 36-second pin over Jami White of Milford for the 157-pound title. At 126 pounds, Anthony Andrews knocked off top-ranked Dominic Lucian of Salesianum with a 12-4 major decision. Trailing 1-0 in the second period Andrew capitalized when both wrestlers shot at the same time, Andrews was able to react and throw Lucian to his back for seven points then added another takedown in the third period.

Frankie Norris of Wm. Penn scored a takedown at the buzzer for a 5-4 decision over Jordan Payne of Christiana at 175 pounds. The Colonials added a second individual title at 285 pounds when Eli Juarquin-Torres escaped in the third overtime period for a 2-1 decision over St. Georges Jahlil Settles.

Four other schools claimed individual champions on Saturday. Mason Milligan of First State Military edged Caesar Rodney’s Cole Moffett 3-2 at 120 pounds. Tye Bellarin of Red Lion Christian recorded a pin over Danny McElwee of Milford in 3:16 at 132 pounds. Four-time state champion Eddie Radecki crowned Caravel Academy’s lone champion at 144 pounds, pinning Salesianum’s Jacob Girard in 3:35, and Zakir Roberson brought home the 215-pound title for Delcastle, scoring a late takedown to edge Caravel’s Brock Rhoades 9-8.
