Sixers rookie sensation Jared McCain will officially miss the remainder of the season as he recovers from a left knee injury, the team announced Thursday evening.
McCain, who suffered a torn meniscus in the Sixers’ Dec. 13 game against the Indiana Pacers, underwent surgery to repair the injury on Dec. 17. The surgeon who completed the procedure reexamined McCain on Thursday when it was determined that despite progressing well he will remain out for the rest of the season.
Prior to the injury, McCain was in the conversation for Rookie of the Year honors. He averaged 15.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists and shot 46% from the field, including 38.3% from three. He joined NBA Hall of Famer Allen Iverson as the only Sixers rookie to average 15 points and two made three-pointers.
The peak of McCain’s season came in mid-November when he scored 20 points or more in seven straight games, a feat only Iverson completed as a rookie. For that effort, McCain was named NBA Rookie of the Month for October and November, an award he received at Monday’s game against the Phoenix Suns. McCain, who entered Wells Fargo Center on crutches, was honored at halftime.
