Second in a recurring series on Delaware high-school athletes and how they’re doing at the college level or in the pros. This week: Men’s and Women’s Basketball. If we’ve missed someone, please send a note to me at [email protected].

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Corey Perkins

Delaware State University has three Delawareans on its roster. Senior Corey Perkins (Sanford) is averaging 22 minutes per game, 7.2 points per game, and 3.7 assists per game. And sophomore Dean Shepherd (Tower Hill) has played in 11 games, averaging 6.5 minutes and 2.3 points. He scored a season-high seven points against Penn State-Wilkes Barre.

Delaware Alumni -- Aiden TobiasonAiden Tobiason (St. Elizabeth) is getting an increasing amount of playing time as a freshman at Temple. He’s scoring 4.1 points per game, with 18 coming against Holy Family. Aiden was Delaware’s 2024 Player of the Year, averaging 18.8 points per game and being selected first-team All-State.

Jaylin Horsey (William Penn), a Wilmington University freshman, plays a significant role for the Wildcats. He averages 11.3 points per game, which is second on the team. His 45.9% 3-point average leads the team. His best game came against Georgian Court on Dec. 3 when he scored 27 points and shot 7-11 from three-point land to lead the Wildcats to a 92-71 win.

Robert Wright III (Wilmington) is off to a good start in his freshman season for the 25th-ranked Baylor Bears. Wright is coming off a high school basketball national championship as his Monteverde Academy team went 33-0 last season. Now in college, Wright is averaging 12.7 points per game and 5.4 assists. His scoring high came Dec. 4 when he scored 22 points against UConn. His assist high came on Dec. 11 when he dished out 13 assists against Norfolk State.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Allie Kubek (Sanford) is averaging 10.7 points on the season for the Maryland Terrapins. Allie scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds against William & Mary on Dec. 19, and also scored 20 against St. Francis and 16 against Syracuse. She’s averaging 10.1 points and 22 minutes per game, shooting 57.8% from the field.

India Johnston (Caravel) is playing well for Towson University, averaging 12.7 points on the season and has 24 assists in 10 games. Last season, Johnston led the Towson team in three-point field goal percentage at 37.4% and currently sits second on the team at 34.6%. India’s best game this season came on Nov. 17th when she scored 22 points against Maryland.

Ericka Huggins (St. Elizabeth) has started five games at Delaware State University and played in 11.  She’s averaging 5.7 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, and scored 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in an 80-44 win against Cheyney.

 MEN’S PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL

Delaware Alumni -- Donte DiVincenzoDonte DiVincenzo (Salesianum) Donte was traded from the New York Knicks to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the offseason. For the Timberwolves this season, Donte is averaging 9.0 points per game. His best game of the season came Dec 21 against another former team, the Golden State Warriors, as he scored 19 points, going three for six from the three-point line. He signed a four-year, $47 million contract with the Knicks to play with his college teammates Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart. He averaged career highs in points (15.5 points), games (81), minutes (29.1), average field goals made (5.5), average field goals attempted (12.4), average three-pointers made and attempted (3.5/8.7), and three-point percentage (40%).

Jaylen Duren (New Castle) played for two high-profile high school programs outside of Delaware (Roman Catholic H.S. and Monteverde Academy) before attending Memphis under head coach Penny Hardaway in 2021. He was selected 13th overall in the 2022 NBA draft and has spent his first few seasons with the Detroit Pistons, averaging 11.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game over his first two seasons. Jaylen took a leap in his second season, averaging 13.8 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per contest in Detroit as their starting center.  So far this season, he’s averaging 9.0 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.

Delaware Alumni -- Bones HylandNah’Shon “Bones” Hyland (St. Georges) is playing in his fourth NBA season. He was traded two seasons ago from the champion Denver Nuggets, where he averaged 12 points per game off the bench, to the Los Angeles Clippers, where he’s had to fight for playing time. Last season, he played in only 37 games, and his minutes were cut from 19 per game to 14, partly because of the acquisitions of James Harden and Norman Powell. After averaging a career-low 6.9 points per game in 2023-24 on only 38.6% shooting and playing only four minutes per game in the playoffs, Hyland is seeing more of the same this year. He’s only played in 12 of the Clippers’ 30 games, averaging 11 minutes per game, 8.4 points per game, and 41.1% shooting from the field. Given the other players on the team, some pundits are saying he’s a trade candidate later this year.

Brian Cameron (Delaware Military Academy) plays for Z&Z Feyenoord, a Dutch professional basketball team out of Rotterdam. Brian was named player of the month as the scored 28 points per game, 6.5 assists, 5.5 rebounds, and two steals as the team went 3-1.
